Justin over at chromogenic.net posted a beautiful short film he shot on super 8mm film. Go check it out. He is definitely one who continues to embrace and master the techniques of classic visual mediums in this age of digital imaging. I give him mad props for that.
Seeing something like that makes me feel a little guilty about how digital I've become... Hell... every time I open my fridge, seeing this box of Velvia untouched since July makes me feel guilty.
Last week I was at a screening to sign off on an ad I've worked on that was set for cinematic released, my first. While going over some technical info with the guy who did the digital to film transfer before the screening, he said "All you kids with your digital stuff, in the end of the day, you still need to get it back on film to make it the real deal." I politely ignored that comment but deep down I wanted to say "DLP looks better BITCH!"
Yet after watching the spot on the big screen, I was speechless. Yes it had a lot to do with the fact it was on a big freaking screen but there was something else. I watched the spot again on my broadcast monitor at work and something was missing, it looked too perfect, too clean... dare I say, soulless.
I can argue all I want on the technical side of things why digital is better, but I can't ignore the emotional quality the comes with film. It has been the one thing I've worked so hard to mimic digitally but have yet to be able to achieve results that's convincing to me. |
